Drinking pure water is absolutely vital for anyone’s health in order to keep the body properly hydrated as well as assist the body with the filtering process. But for some people, drinking water is too ‘plain’ and so lemons are added to give it a little bit of flavor. That is actually a good thing!
Lemons have many unique health benefits, such as a natural detoxifier, improving digestion, neutralizing acid in the body, aiding in weight loss, and improving skin conditions. (1) However, did you know that you could reap the benefits of the essential oils from the lemon peels?
Fight against yeast infections
There have been countless studies about the benefits of various essential oils. To this day, over 14,000 articles on various essential oils have been studied and about 500 of them have been on lemon oil alone. (1)
Lemon oil appears to provide the benefits linked to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities against bad bacteria, yeast, and fungi. This includes Candida albicans, which is a fungal infection caused by yeasts, and there are over 20 different species that can cause infections in humans. (2,3)
Help reduce nausea and vomiting
A fairly recent study was published that took a look on the effects of lemon essential oil in pregnant women dealing with vomiting and nausea. About 100 women were randomly selected in the clinical trial and split into: a lemon oil intervention group, and a control group. (4)
The results show a dramatic difference. The group which received the lemon essential oil reported decreased symptoms from vomiting and nausea in as little as two days. Within four days, there was an average symptom decrease of 33%. (4)
Although this study was specifically geared towards pregnant women, others dealing with the same symptoms could possibly see similar benefits. (1)
Reverse diabetic neuropathy
A study done by the Central Food Technological Research Institute evaluated how a phytonutrient found in lemons, called geraniol, aided in reversing diabetic neuropathy. (1,5) Diabetic neuropathy is damage to nerves in the body that occurs due to high blood sugar levels from diabetes. (6)
After an 8 week study, the sciatic nerve damage was reduced through lemon oil use. When lemon oil was used regularly, cellular function was restored and energy stores were regulated. (1)
The lemon fruit is low in calories, high in vitamin C, and a natural antioxidant, making it an attractive addition to flavor your water. If you look closely at the lemon peel by squeezing or twisting the outer zest portion, you’ll be able to see lemon oils dripping out. (1)
Cool huh? Go ahead and boost the flavor of your water with some lemon today!
