Skin tags look like small pieces of hanging skin, typically found on the neck, underarms, chest, groin, eyelids, and under breasts.  They are complete with nerve cells, fat cells, and a core of fibers and ducts. Approximately 46% of people have skin tags. (1)

Skin tags are benign tumors that do not cause any symptoms, unless irritated by repeated rubbing or scratching from jewelry, clothing, or shaving. (1,2) The appearance of skin tags generally occur after midlife, caused by collagen and blood vessels getting trapped inside thicker parts of the skin. (1)

Fortunately, there are natural home remedies to remove bothersome skin tags. (2) Here are three remedies to consider.

Tea Tree Oil

This powerful oil has been used for thousands of years to treat cuts, burns, and even acne. Tea Tree Oil can also be used to remove skin tags. (2,3)

First, wash the affected area with soap and water, and then pat the area with a clean towel until fully dry. Next, add one drop of undiluted tea tree oil onto the gauze pad portion of an adhesive bandage (or band-aid). Finally, secure the bandage over the skin tag to allow direct contact with the oil. (4)

Tea tree oil is ideal for removing skin tags because it helps soothe the skin and keeps it from being infected due to its antiseptic ability. (2)

Apple Cider Vinegar

Another wonderful natural solution is to use apple cider vinegar (ACV). It is acidic in nature and a natural antiseptic that can be used to influence the skin tag to fall off naturally. (5)

First, run warm water over the affected area until the skin tag becomes soft. Next, use a cotton ball or swab that is soaked with ACV and apply it to the skin tag for 20 minutes. Finally, rinse the ACV off thoroughly. You will want to repeat this treatment process two to three times a day, on a daily basis, until the skin tag falls off. (5)

Like tea tree oil, ACV is a good method for removing skin tags due to its antiseptic qualities. (2)

Like tea tree oil and ACV, garlic is a natural antiseptic which makes it a wonderful treatment to remove skin tags. The only caution is that the skin can become hot, so be careful with the process. (2,5)

First, wash the affected area with soap and water, and then pat the area with a clean towel until fully dry. Next, thinly slice the garlic cloves into small ‘discs.’ Finally, rub the affected area with the garlic discs and leave a piece to cover the skin tag, securing with a band-aid. You want to leave it on throughout the day, but before bedtime remove it and rinse your skin. Repeat this process on a daily basis until the skin tag falls off, usually 4 to 6 days. (2,5)
