An Arizona man, Bernardo LaPallo, is 113 years old and feels great! Many think he’s much younger. His skin is wrinkle-free and he’s still quite active. What’s the key to his longevity? He says it’s all about obedience and moderation. He says, “Obedience is the key. Moderation is the back up.” (1)

About three years ago, he was interviewed and received two-thirds of a million views on Arizona’s News YouTube channel, sharing his secret for a long and full life. He credits his health to getting plenty of rest, eating right, walking everyday, and eating local organic fruits and vegetables. He claims he has never been sick in his life. (2)

As Bernardo simply tells us, “You are what you eat!” (2) He says that his secret contains these five foods: garlic, honey, cinnamon, chocolate, and olive oil.

If you haven’t been including garlic in your daily routine, then maybe you should start! The health benefits of garlic have been utilized since the ancient times, and countless studies continue to reveal it’s amazing benefits! The health benefits of garlic include, but are not limited to, boosting the immune system, fighting infections and inflammation, combating cancer, and protecting many more conditions. (3)

Raw honey has many health benefits. If you eat local raw honey, it can fight seasonal allergies. Honey is high in antioxidants, can heal wounds and rashes when applied to the skin, treat acne.  This golden liquid is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial, promotes digestive health, boosts the immune system, and can be used to treat sore throats and colds. (4)

Choose raw honey over pasteurized because the pasteurization process kills off beneficial organisms such as probiotics and yeasts. It also destroys natural compounds the bee left in the honey like pollen and propolis. Filtering further removes these nutritious impurities. Honey that has gone through a heating and filtering process is no more nutritious than refined sugar. (4)

Choosing good quality cinnamon – especially premium grade, cold-pressed, organic Ceylon – can do wonders for your health.  Cinnamon is rich in fiber, manganese, and calcium and has been used for thousands of years as a flavorful spice and medicine; cinnamon truly has made its mark in numerous cultures. It can be especially helpful in aiding with diabetes, preventing cancer, halting arthritis, the common cold, and digestive disorders, to name a few. (5)

This is one of the foods that many people have come to adore. Fortunately, it is very healthy and provides many health benefits. Eating in moderation is the key, while over-indulgence may be a treat. The cacao is full of plant-derived flavanols, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory components, and health-boosting ingredients! Stick with the raw and organic kinds or opt for the darkest chocolate without the refined ingredients added. (6)

Olive Oil

Rich in beneficial fats that help boost your heart and brain health, olive oil prevents cognitive decline and any risks of cardiovascular disease. It has anti-inflammatory benefits, fights cancer, and more. It can be used internally and externally. In fact, LaPallo claims that his faithful use of olive oil on his skin is what kept it smooth. He rubs some on his skin after his nightly warm showers. (1,7)

Well, there you have it! These five foods have been around for centuries and should be a normal part of our daily life!
